Seriously vibesin' as I was lucky enough this month to have secured an interview with the cool ruler José James. Labelmate to Robert Glasper, Gregory Porter, Ambrose Akinmusire and Takuya Kuroda, he is the rising star in the Blue Note firmament. We seemed to somehow miss each other a few times over the last couple of years but we finally managed to hook up and chew the fat about his groundbreaking latest Blue Note LP 'While You Were Sleeping', our fellow appreciation of the work of Nick Drake, and his early career break which took place in the UK.
Name me any other pastime/occupation which allows you to play some of the most fantastic music in the world? When I say fantastic music I include the likes of Theo Croker, Matthew Halsall, Sumochief, Lil John Roberts, and Atlanta's very own Ryan Kilgore (saxophonist for Stevie Wonder), and the Dangerfield Newbies. Beyond fantastic is the new LP called 'First Steps' from keyboardist Cory Henry (of Snarky Puppy), which is a stunning piece of work, and the offering from Mellow Baku and the Friday People 'Call Me Again' which is a proper summer belter.
