Welcome to my summer kick-off edition of Continuum - A Journey Through Jazz – and the way I'd like to kick off this particular summer is with some Soul Jazz to facilitate your boogaloo beach blast or pool party . . . you know, wherever & whenever you gather with friends in swim wear and dance the boogaloo, mash potato, monkey, madison, jive, watusi, swim or whatever you crazy kids call those dance moves you do these days. Actually I prefer dimly lit basements of juke joints to do my soul jazz dancing . . . fewer embarrassing swimsuits, and less sand.
However you wish to use it - I’ve created a two hour soundtrack of soul jazz for you, spanning 1960 to 2014 . . . and its a stone cold gas. So kick back and dig grooves from the 1960s by Willis Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Burrell (with Brother Jack McDuff), Nat Adderley, Cannonball Adderley, Big John Patton, Roy Ayers, Gene Ammons & The Afro Soultet . . . soul jazz from the 1970's by Donny Hathaway, Gene Russell, George Duke & Asiko . . . and more recent renditions of soul jazz from the likes of Action Figure Party, Lorenzo Tucci, Timo Lassy, Gaetano Partipilo, Mighty Mighty, Eric Alexander, Auteur Jazz, Sugarman 3, Leo Gandelman, Matt Wilson Quartet (with John Medeski), John Sandfort, Dan Baraszu, Dave Ellington & Speedometer.
So - stream or download - and then chill, dance, or play it loudly in public to impress your friends with how incredibly hip you are.
