Here we are again - more musical niceness guaranteed to take you to a musical happy place.
A special show this month as we spend some time in the company of one of the UK's finest jazz vocalists Zara MacFarlane. She talks insightfully about her latest release 'If You Knew Her' on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label and her feelings as she embarks on her first UK tour. This is my second interview with Zara and as I've watched her grow as an artist I become more and more impressed.
Joe Sample is one of my all time keyboard heroes so it's a natural follow on to include his group The Crusaders in jazz funk mode as a starting point for this months proceedings - especially after their straight ahead showing as the Jazz Crusaders in last months show. Lots of new business on offer including from the UK Debra Debs, Peter Edwards Trio, Dego & Kaidi, Lack of Afro and Magic Number (the mighty Atjazz on remix duties). Finally we have the return of the Afro Elements (Simon T Bramley and Phil Nelson) with an LP (initially released in Japan) which will run and run over the next few months - a real tour de force of soulful jazzy grooves. I've also fallen in love with the Foreign Exchange LP 'Love in Flying Colours' which really hits the sweet spot and is laden with beautiful soulful strings. We've a serious jazz groove from Estonia courtesy of gifted saxophonist Villu Veski and a scene stealing cover of Minnie Ripertons 'Adventures In Paradise' by NYC based The Decoders. Italians Mighty Mighty round off proceedings with an LP that is now a contender for Jazz LP of the year in my book (and there's plenty of competition).
